JeanLyle2011-103-1024x681.jpg

Jean Lyle is dedicated to the education of the whole child. Children discover their world through play, and our classes provide the setting for sharing ideas, solving problems, forming friendships, and building confidence. Academic activities and technical skills are woven into theme-based units designed to engage and challenge. Students have time each day for a variety of play activities and creative opportunities in our welcoming spaces.

All classes have the goals of nurturing social and emotional development, developing and inspiring creativity, providing opportunities for cognitive development and problem-solving skills, and learning to initiate, develop, and reflect upon their own ideas. Children are challenged to develop language and math skills and to take risks with beginning writing skills.

Children grow and learn at an astonishing rate. A first school experience should be an extension of the love and care they have at home.

The 3-Day AM class often serves as a first “out of home” school experience for young children. The class emphasizes beginning independence, creative interactive play, learning centers, experiential art, stories, literacy, music, laughter, and fun.

Young children in our afternoon preschool learn in a mixed-age, play-based environment with a focus on social and emotional development and school skills.

This mixed-age class meets Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 12:30 until 3:15. This class allows younger children the chance to attend two years in a row and offers older children the opportunity to take on leadership roles in the classroom. This class works especially well for families who prefer a shorter school week, and for children who are not early risers.

This program nurtures our students’ love for learning as well as their social skills, independence, community membership, and academic progress. More structured than our preschool classes, the kindergarten class is suited to children with well-developed attention spans who are ready to move into more defined project work. Our goal is to meet children where they are and provide engaging and developmentally appropriate opportunities for them to move forward on the social, emotional, and cognitive continuums. This is possible due to our small class size, high teacher-to-student ratio, and ability to adjust our lessons to meet the needs of our specific students.

The kindergarten program is for children who will be at least 4.5 years old by September 1. Admission to our program is dependent upon teacher recommendation and consideration of age and developmental readiness. Children new to JLCC will need to have an assessment form filled out by current teachers.

As a fully licensed kindergarten, our program provides a nurturing, confidence building, academically appropriate environment for students to prepare for first grade. It can also serve as a pre-k readiness program for students with summer or fall birthdays, who then go on to attend an all day kindergarten class the following year. To further help our students prepare for the type of school day they will experience when they leave JLCC, our kindergarten program ends with a partial week of all-day classes (generally 9:30–3:00). Schedules have been changed this year to add more outdoor time. This class is a contained cohort, not sharing materials or space with any other Jean Lyle Group.
